Backfield in Motion

I’ve been in training for tomorrow’s Superbowl for a few weeks now. Of course, I won’t be taking part in the game – I’ve been staying up until three or four in the morning so I can watch the game live. The grand finale of the American football season will kick off tomorrow afternoon in Texas, but it’ll be nearly midnight by the time the action gets underway on this side of the pond. Superbowl XLV is, as its name suggests, the 45th instalment of the annual clash between the champions of the AFC and the NFC. The Green Bay Packers will represent the American Football Conference, while the Pittsburgh Steelers will carry the flag of the National Football Conference. It’s the Steelers eight Superbowl appearance and the fifth for the Packers with Pittsburgh leading by six titles to three. The Packers are slight favourites, so hopefully it’ll be a close game with lots of scores

Glock ‘n’ Roll

Former Vesta Varro frontman and songwriter dREA has just put up a wonderful new song on Soundcloud called Through The Wire. The track begins in a low-key fashion with just dREA’s vocals accompanied by an instrument that doesn’t feature too often in rock & roll – the glockenspiel. Then a piano comes in and is followed by some nice guitar fills before the rhythm section appears. The guitars and the song get heavier for the chorus before quietening down again by the midway point. Strings are added to the mix here and it then builds to a climax as the music ties in nicely with the song’s uplifting tune and lyrics. The strings have been arranged by Kenneth Rice, who was a member of Kilkenny’s Engine Alley and is now a classical musician. Ken is just one of a number of talented Irish musicians involved in the recording. Michael Moloney is vocalist for Dublin band Director and he contributes bass and guitar to the track. Fellow guitarist Kieran Calvert has been an integral member of both Woodstar and The Low Network while Karol Drea has been annoying his neighbours but delighting music fans with his drumming for nearly three decades now

Let’s Go Crazy

The current Irish government packed it in yesterday and the electorate will go to the polls to elect a new one at the end of the month. I returned home from work earlier to find the first of hundreds of pamphlets that’ll be popping through my door over the coming weeks. This one’s from Kieran O’Donnell of Fine Gael, one of five sitting TDs in my constituency of Limerick city. At least one of that number will miss out later this month as the constituency will now return just four representatives. Mr O’Donnell was sorry not to meet me, as you can see from his expression and the message beneath his name. Well, he may be sorry to find me at home should he decide to make a return visit. Apart from his name, the front of the leaflet contains a mere eleven words and a number. Nevertheless, the person responsible for this flyer has managed to make a glaring error by omitting the apostrophe from the first word of the party’s slogan. At least they remembered the one in their candidate’s name. Here’s Frank Sinatra with a song from his 1958 album Come Fly With Me that uses the correct abbreviation of “let us”. It also delivers a sentiment that many young Irish men and women are currently expressing by deserting these shores in their droves

You Only Live Once

The film composer John Barry passed away yesterday at the age of 77. He’s best known for his work on numerous Bond films but he also won Oscars for Born Free, the Lion in Winter, Out of Africa and Dances with Wolves. All but one of the songs below comes from a Bond film, with four of them bearing the title of the movie from which they are taken. We Have All the Time in the World originally appeared in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, while All Time High was seen as a more suitable choice of title than Octopussy. My favourite piece of music written by Barry, however, was his main theme for Midnight Cowboy. Despite the title of the opening number, it seems, after all, that you only live once

You Only Live Twice (Nancy Sinatra cover) – The Postmarks

The Man With The Golden Gun (Lulu cover) – Emiliana Torrini

We Have All The Time In The World (Louis Armstrong cover) – My Bloody Valentine

All Time High (Rita Coolidge cover) – Jarvis Cocker & David Arnold

Diamonds Are Forever (Shirley Bassey cover) – Arctic Monkeys

Goldfinger (Shirley Bassey cover) – Santo & Johnny

Midnight Cowboy (John Barry cover) – Faith No More
