The Party’s Over

Voting booths have just opened in 43 constituencies all over Ireland in an attempt to choose 165 representatives from 566 hopefuls to make up the next Irish government. Since 1932, Ireland’s largest political party, Fianna Fáil, has been the main government party for nearly 60 years in total and has been in power for all but 30 months in the last 24 years. This period of time coincided with the affluence of the Celtic Tiger, but also with its recent collapse. As a result, the party’s dominance in the opinion polls has also collapsed by almost two-thirds since the 2007 election. Fine Gael, historically the country’s second party, have benefitted the most, while Labour, Sinn Féin and Independent candidates have also seen promising increases in their support. What all this means is that Fine Gael will be the main party after the voting has been completed and will most likely form a coalition with Labour. For the first time in the nation’s history, the “Soldiers of Destiny” look like being relegated to third place. The party’s slump in popularity forced many of its members to jump ship before the election was called and will see many more lose their seats this weekend. This frightening scenario has seen at least one former government minister resort to desperate measures in order to hold onto his seat

A Country Music Joint

Last Friday morning, Willie Nelson and some of his entourage were wheeling down the highway from California to his ranch in Austin, Texas. The country singer was in his bus named the Honeysuckle Rose III when it had to stop at a border control check. A certain aromatic smell emanated from within the bus and when the border police conducted a search they found six ounces of cannabis inside. Willie admitted that he owned the pot and was duly arrested, charged and taken to a local jail. He was released on bail and now faces up to three months in the joint. It’s not the first time the 77-year-old musician has been in trouble with the law and it’s unlikely it’ll be the last. Maybe one day he’ll write a song about the experience. The song Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In) was written by Mickey Newbury and was originally a hit for Kenny Rogers & the First Edition in 1968. Willie’s version appears on his Rainbow Connection album from 2001. According to Willie’s harmonica player, Mickey Raphael, the Texan’s current condition is quite good. “He said he feels great,” Raphael admitted. “He lost six ounces.”

Funny How Time Slips Away

Today marks a day of celebration and commemoration for some of my favourite musical figures. The American singer-songwriters Amanda Palmer and Willie Nelson both celebrate their birthdays. Amanda turns 34 while the legend that is Willie is a sprightly 77! Eighteen years ago, the influential rock critic Lester Bangs overdosed on tranquilisers in New York city at the age of 33. A year later, 70-year-old bluesman Muddy Waters died in his sleep in Westmont, Illinois. And, in the last few hours, it has been announced that the Irish TV and radio presenter Gerry Ryan has died in his sleep at his home in Dublin, aged just 53. This song goes out to anybody who is celebrating a birth or commemorating the passing of a life on this day
